LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Penn State women’s volleyball team opens the 2018 season as the No. 6 team in the nation according to the American Volleyball Coaches Association Top-25 preseason poll that was announced on Wednesday afternoon.
The Nittany Lions came in at No. 6 behind Stanford, Nebraska, Texas, Minnesota, and Kentucky.
The Big Ten made up 40-percent of the top ten teams as Wisconsin rolled in at No. 9. Illinois, Michigan State, and Purdue were all also ranked, coming in at No. 12, No. 22, and No. 23, respectively.
Penn State will have 11 matches against preseason Top-25 opponents, nine coming in Big Ten play, as well as two of nonconference opponents in Stanford, the preseason No. 1, and Oregon, who came in at No. 18.
The Nittany Lions have now been ranked in the AVCA Top-25 for 427 poll releases, dating back to the 1988 end of season poll.
Penn State opens the season at home on Friday, August 24 as they host Eastern Kentucky at 7:30 p.m. for the first match of the Penn State Classic.
Fans can purchase single match online here, by calling 1-800-NITTANY, or by visiting the Bryce Jordan Center ticket office in person Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Adult tickets are $9 in advance, with costs rising to $11 at the door match days. Youth tickets cost $5 if purchased in advance. Groups of 20 or more can purchase tickets for $4 each as well.
