NASHVILLE, Tenn., October 20, 2002 ¨C The Penn State women¡¯s tennis squad ran into some tough competition this weekend at the 2002 June Stewart Invitational held at the Brownlee O. Currey Tennis Center of Vanderbilt University. The three-day event featured some of the most outstanding women¡¯s tennis programs and players in the nation, with the likes of Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Kentucky, Middle Tennessee State, Clemson, Marshall, Purdue, Georgia Tech, and Penn State participating. The competitors were split up into seven flights of singles action and four flights of doubles matches.

Lindsay Downing (Phoenix, Ariz.) posted the best individual performance of the weekend for the Lady Lions with a third place finish in flight six. She cruised through her first round match in straight sets before dropping a three-set heartbreaker to eventual flight champion Shannon Stough of Kentucky. In the battle for third place, Downing released her frustration on Laura McNamara of Middle Tennessee State, prevailing in straight sets. In other singles action, senior Judy Wang (Eagan, Minn.) won two of her three singles contests to post a fifth place finish in flight five.

In doubles action, junior Leigh Ann Merryman (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and sophomore Maaria Husain (Marion, Ohio) proved once again to be a potent combination, rolling to third place honors in flight two. Their only loss of the weekend came to the eventual flight champions from Kentucky. Husain and Merryman are now 5-2 as a duo this season.

Select Lady Lions will return to action this Friday at the Omni National Regional Championships, which will run through October 29.
