Women's Tennis Falls To Northwestern In Big Ten Quarterfinal

CHAMPAIGN, Ill.; April 28, 2006 ¨C Despite a first set victory by Katelyn BeVard, the No. 8 seeded Women's Tennis team fell early to No. 1 seeded Northwestern in the second round of the Big Ten Championship, 4-0.

BeVard (McLean, Va.) won the first set 7-5 against Northwestern's Alexis Prouis, but lost her second set 0-6. BeVard, Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) and Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, B.C.) abandoned their matches after Northwestern won the doubles point and the first three singles points. Northwestern went undefeated in the Big Ten this year and completed their regular season play ranked 11th in the nation.

At No. 1 singles, Sasha Abraham (Hyderabad, India) lost to Northwestern's Georgia Rose, who is ranked 43rd in the country, 6-1, 6-2. Andreea Niculescu (Montreal, Quebec) lost her match at the No. 2 spot 6-1, 6-1, to Wildcat Cristelle Grier, who is currently ranked 10th in the nation.

Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) lost her match at No. 5 singles, 7-5, 6-3, to Northwestern's Feriel Esseghir.

The Lions complete their season with a 9-13 record. The loss to Northwestern brings their record to 3-9 in the Big Ten.
