Lauren Holzberg defeated her Michigan State opponent, 6-2, 6-0 in her No. 5 singles match on Sunday. Sasha Abraham picked up a No. 1 singles win and paired with Jenny Shular to also come away victorious in No. 1 doubles. The Lions next head to the Big Ten Tournament at Illinois, slated to begin on Thursday. Penn State snagged the No. 8 seed and faces No. 9 seed Minnesota in the first round.

EAST LANSING, Mich.; April 23, 2006 - Penn State picked up two singles wins Sunday vs. Michigan State, but the Spartans outlasted the Lions in East Lansing for a 5-2 team win in the regular season finale for both programs.

The Lions finish the spring season with an 8-12 record overall and a 2-8 mark in Big Ten play.

Sasha Abraham (Hyderabad, India) finished the regular season on a high note, winning her No. 1 singles match over the Spartans' Christine Bader. 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Abraham also picked up a No. 1 doubles win alongside Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.). The duo teamed for an 8-4 win over Michigan State's team of Bader and Sarah Andrews. Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) also won her singles match, cruising to a No. 5 singles win over Andrews, 6-2, 6-0.

In other singles action, Michigan State's Pascal Schnitzer topped Andreea Niculescu (Montreal, Quebec) 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the No. 2 singles slot. In No. 3 singles, Katelyn BeVard (McLean, Va.) won her first set over Jessica Baron, 6-3, but dropped the second two, 4-6, 2-6. Stephanie Kebler defeated Shular, 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-3 in No. 4 singles and Ana Milosavljevic topped Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, BC) 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 in No. 6 singles.

Baron and Kebler defeated BeVard and Holzberg, 8-5 in No. 2 doubles and Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Niculescu could not get past Schnitzer and Milosavljevic, falling 8-5 to the Michigan State duo.

The Big Ten Tournament begins Thursday, April 27 at Illinois. Penn State snagged the No. 8 seed in the Tournament and will face No. 9 seed Minnesota in the first round. The PSU-Minnesota winner then takes on No. 1 seed Northwestern in the second round on Friday.
