Women's Tennis Edged out at Michigan, 5-2




Leyla Morzan won her No. 6 singles match over Michigan's Lindsay Howard, 7-6(1), 5-7, 7-5 but Michigan came away with the team win on Saturday, 5-2. The Lions close out the regular season at 10 a.m. Sunday at Michigan State.

ANN ARBOR, Mich.; April 22, 2006 - Katelyn BeVard (McLean, Va.) and Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, BC) snagged singles wins Saturday vs. Michigan, but the Wolverines came out on top in the team scoring, pulling out a 5-2 win over the Nittany Lions in Ann Arbor.

BeVard rallied from a first-set defeat to push past Michigan's Nina Yaftali, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 in a No. 3 singles match. Morzan pulled out a tough 7-6(1) first set over Michigan's Lindsey Howard, dropped the second set, 5-7, but came back to clinch the match with a 7-5 third-set victory.

BeVard also teamed with Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) to claim a 9-7 doubles win over Howard and Yaftali.

In No. 1 singles action, Kara Delicata downed Penn State's Sasha Abraham (Hyderabad, India), 6-3, 7-6(4). Elizabeth Exon defeated Andreea Niculescu (Montreal, Quebec), 6-2, 6-0. In No. 4 singles Debra Streifler got past Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.), 6-2, 6-3, and in No. 5 singles Chisako Sugiyama defeated Holzberg, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.

Penn State's No. 1 doubles team of Abraham and Shular fell to Michigan's No. 1 team, ranked 26th nationally, 8-0. Michigan's Allie Shafner and Sugiyama defeated Penn State's Dorothy Dohanics and Niculescu, 8-4.

Penn State next heads to East Lansing to face Michigan State on Sunday at 10 a.m. in the regular season finale.
