University Park, Pa.; April 16, 2006 ¨C Four singles wins and two wins in doubles spurred the Lions to a 5-2 victory over Minnesota today. With the victory, the women improve their record to 8-10 for the season.
Junior Andreea Niculescu (Montreal, Quebec) picked up a win at the No. 2 singles spot. She defeated Minnesota's Ida Malmberg, 6-4, 6-4.
At the No. 3 spot, junior Katelyn BeVard (McLean, Va.) topped Minnesota's Danielle Mousseau, 6-4, 6-2. Junior Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) picked up her second singles win of the weekend at the No. 4 singles spot, dominatining her first set to beat out Mariana Spilca, 6-0, 6-4.
"It's been a great weekend for Shular singles-wise," said head coach Buffy Baker. "She's had a tough time overcoming mono, but she's back playing at her level and we're happy about that."
At the No. 5 spot, freshman Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) took home the win against Gopher Jane Anderson, 6-3, 6-3.
The Lions grabbed the doubles point, with BeVard and Holzberg topping Gophers Spilca and Danielle Mousseau, 8-2. Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, B.C.) and Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) combined efforts to secure the point with a 8-5 win over Minnesota's Anderson and Marina Bugaenco.
"I felt like it was a great weekend for us," said Baker. "I thought we competed very well against Iowa, and I just felt that if we could show up today and control our effort level and our fight that we would be fine, and we were. We controlled our doubles point and we did a good job of controlling our game in singles."
The Lions will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. next weekend to take on Michigan. The match begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
