Penn State Drops Match to Wisconsin, 4-3

Madison, Wisc., April 1, 2006 - The Penn State women's tennis team lost to Wisconsin, 4-3, today at the Badger's Nielson Stadium. The Lions dropped their second Big Ten contest in a row to bring their record to 7-7 overall and 2-3 in the Big Ten. Wisconsin won its first Big Ten match of the season and moved to 4-12 overall and 1-3 in the Big Ten.

Doubles pair Katelyn BeVard (McLean, Va.) and Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) won their No. 2 match against Morgan Tuttle and Chelsea Nusslock 9-8. Penn State's top doubles pair Sasha Abraham (Hyderabad, India) and Andreea Niculescu (Montreal, Quebec) lost to the Badger's Nicole Beck and Kaylan Caiati, 8-6. The Lions No. 3 doubles team of Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) lost, 8-3, to Elizabeth Carpenter and Erin Jobe.

In singles, Penn State started out strong, picking up three points in the first three matches. No. 6 Dohanics picked up Penn State 's first point with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Wisconsin 's Jobe. No. 5 Shular continued the streak, winning her match, 7-5, 6-0 over Tuttle. No. 4 Holzberg picked up the Lions third point with her tough fought 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Carpenter.

The Badgers gained momentum in the top three matches. In the No. 1 match, Wisconsin's Caitai came back to defeat Abraham, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. BeVard came out strong in the No. 3 match, but lost to Beck, 0-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5). In the last match, No. 2 Niculescu dropped a very close match to Nusslock, 6-7 (7-3), 7-5, 7-5.

The Lions return to action next Saturday, April 8 at 11 a.m. when they travel to Ohio State.
