University Park, Pa. March 26, 2006¡ªThe Penn State women¡¯s tennis team lost to the very talented No. 36 Purdue Boilermakers on Sunday March 26 at Penn State¡¯s Indoor Tennis Center. The 7-0 loss halted the Lions¡¯ three-game winning streak. Highlighting the day was the 8-5 doubles win by the duo Katelyn BeVard (McLean, Va.) and Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.). Other than the big doubles victory at the No. 2 spot by BeVard and Shular versus Randi Schuler and Brooke Beier, Penn State was unable to come out on top again. Sasha Abraham (Hyderabad, India) and Andreea Niculescu (Montreal, Quebec) fell to Purdue¡¯s Hala Sufi and Mallory Voelker, 8-5. Freshmen Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) were defeated at the No. 3 doubles spot to Brittany Minna and Stephanie Wooten, 8-6. The Lions made strong showings in singles play even though no points were earned. Sufi led off for the Boilermakers at No. 1 singles and defeated Abraham in a tight 6-4, 6-4 match. Niculescu followed at the No. 2 spot with a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Schuler. Beier continued Purdue¡¯s attack by topping BeVard 7-5, 6-1. At the No. 4 spot, Holzberg fell to Voelker 6-1, 6-3. Despite the strong effort by Shular, Wooten came out on top 7-6(4), 6-2. Concluding singles play, Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, B.C.) battled Anna Dzeva but lost 6-2, 6-3. The Lions are scheduled next to play at Wisconsin on Saturday April 1. This Big Ten action is set to begin at 11 a.m.
