Women¡¯s Tennis on a Roll

University Park, Pa. March 22, 2006 ¡ª The Penn State women¡¯s tennis team did not drop a single match en route to a 7-0 sweep over Bucknell on Wednesday March 22 at the Penn State Indoor Tennis Center. The Lions recorded their second shut out in a row and their fourth of the season.

The Nittany Lion¡¯s No. 1 doubles duo Sasha Abraham and Andreea Niculescu (Hyderabad, India/ Montreal, Quebec) were the first to strike for Penn State in their 8-3 win over the Bison¡¯s Veronica Brown and Paulina Gamboa. Jenny Shular paired with Katelyn BeVard (Peachtree City, Ga./ McLean, Va.) and clinched the doubles point for the Lions when they topped Chelsea Mills and Ashley Globerman, 8-0. Lauren Holzberg and Dorothy Dohanics (Easton, Conn./ Pittsburgh, Pa.) carried out the doubles sweep with an 8-2 victory over Caitlin Baffa and JoAnna Grossman.

Penn State ran with the momentum into singles action. Niculescu rolled past Brown at the No. 1 spot 6-1, 6-1. BeVard then topped Gamboa 6-1, 6-3. Shular kept the winning theme alive with her 6-2, 6-2 victory over Mills at the No. 3 spot. Holzberg was the only Lion to drop a match, but she still outlasted Globerman 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, B.C.) recorded a win at the No. 5 spot against Baffa 6-1, 6-1. Kristine Harclerode (Lancaster, Pa.) grabbed a 6-2, 6-3 win over Grossman to conclude Penn State¡¯s 7-0 sweep over Bucknell.

This sweep boosts the Lion¡¯s record to 6-5 on the season.

Penn State heads back into Big Ten action this weekend on their home courts. The Lions take on the No. 46 Fighting Illini on Fri. March 24 at 5 p.m. and then compete against No. 36 Purdue on Sun. March 26. Action will begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
