Women's Tennis Tabs Three Wins in Day Two of Purdue Invitational

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - In day two the Purdue Invitational, freshman Amy Simidian (Carlstadt, N.J.) picked up two wins for Penn State. Additionally, senior Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) and sophomore Michaela Stracar (Jericho, N.Y.) picked up a doubles win. Play continues through Sunday at the Schwartz Tennis Center in West Lafayette. Simidian picked up her first win of the day over Purdue's Jennifer Rabot, 6-2, 6-4. Purdue took the remaining five singles matches. Maria Prishlyak (Kiev, Ukraine) lost a tough match to Bhavani Tirumurti. Prishylak won the first set, 6-4. Tirumurti stormed back however, taking the final two sets, 6-4, 6-1. In doubles action vs. the Boilermakers, Stracar and McCarthy tallied an 8-6 victory over Kay Kay Magi and Tirumurti. Purdue went on to win two of the three doubles matches. The Nittany Lions squared off with Marquette in singles action on Saturday as well. Simidian picked up her second singles victory of the day over Purdue's Paola Calderon, 6-3, 7-5. In her matchup with Kelly Barry, McCarthy tied up the match at one set. In the tiebreaker set, McCarthy fell just short, 6-4, 6-7 (3), 1-0 (6). Marquette took four of the five singles matches. Tomorrow, the Lions take on Purdue in doubles at 9 a.m. Following in the afternoon, Penn State faces Miami (Ohio) in singles. Play at the Purdue Invitational continues through Monday. Following this weekend's tournament, the Nittany Lions take a break from competition until next semester. The Lions kick off spring play on Saturday, Jan. 23 when they host the Bucknell Bison at the Penn State Indoor Tennis Center at 11 a.m.
