Nittany Lions Conclude Final Day of Cissie Leary Tournament

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Nittany Lions closed out their play at the Cissie Leary Tournament on the campus of the University of Penn with Marie-Frederique Bedard (Montreal, Canada) winning the her singles consolation flight and the back draw doubles flight with Carmen Sandor (Toronto, Canada).
Following three consecutive victories since dropping her opening match of the weekend, Bedard met Yana Mavrina in the final round of the back draw flight. In a close match, Bedard came away the victor knocking off Mavrina 6-4, 3-6, 10-5 in a third-set tiebreaker wining the flight.
Sophomore Katherine Whiteaway (Sawbridgeworth, England) was also in action in singles during the final day of play at the Cissie Leary Tournament. After falling behind dropping the first set, Whiteaway went on a tear to come from behind and knock off Srinidhi Raghavan of Penn 2-6, 6-3, 10-7 to move into the finals of the consolation flight. In the finals Katya Salas edged Whiteaway, 6-2, 6-2 to win the match.
In doubles the Nittany Lions featured two teams playing for flight championships on the final day. Whiteaway and her partner from Princeton, Sivan Krems, won each of their first three matches moving them into the semifinals of the main draw. The newly formed duo were unable to make it four consecutive wins, falling to Bianca Sanon and Kanika Valdya of Columbia, 8-0.
The other Penn State pair of Bedard and Sandor began their day in the semifinals of the consolation doubles draw against Anna Abadias and Brittany Boys of Richmond winning 8-6. In the final they squared off against their second consecutive Richmond duo when they faced Melissa Kandinata and Katya Salas. The Nittany Lions duo bested their counterparts 8-6 taking home the back draw championship on the final day of play at the Hamlin Tennis Center.
The next tournament on the docket for the Nittany Lions is the Yale Invite in two weeks from October 4-6 in New Haven, Connecticut.
