Nittany Lions Wrap Up First Day of Cissie Leary Tournament

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Freshman Katherine Whiteaway (Sawbridgeworth, England) advanced to the third round of the doubles flight following the first day of play at the Cissie Leary Tournament in Philadelphia. She will face the winner of the second round match between Temple and Columbia/Bowdoin tomorrow in the third round with partner Sivan Krems of Princeton.
The Nittany Lions began the day with doubles play in the morning. Both Nittany Lions teams had byes in the first round. In the second round Marie-Frederique Bedard (Montreal, Canada) and Carmen Sandor (Toronto, Canada) played Cornell's duo of Dena Tannenbaum and Alex D'Ascenzo, falling 8-6. Whiteaway and Krems (Princeton) squared off against Zeynep Mafa and Fiorella Coria of Drexel. The newly formed duo easily won their first match together defeating the Dragons pair, 8-1.
The Nittany Lions struggled in the first round of singles during the afternoon slate. All three lost their opening matches in their respective singles flight. In Flight A, Bedard fell to Alicia Doms of Temple 6-3, 7-5 and Sandor was topped by Luba Vazhenina of Penn 6-3, 6-1 in the second round after a first round bye.
In Flight B, Whiteaway faced Kate Winningham of Bowdoin in the second round following a bye in the opening round. Winningham knocked off Whiteaway 6-4, 6-3 to move into the third round. Bedard rebounded to finish her day with a win knocking off Coria of Drexel in a consolation match, 6-1, 6-2.
The Nittany Lions will be back in action tomorrow with Whiteaway and Krems (Princeton) playing in the third round of doubles and more back draw singles matches for the three Nittany Lions.
