Feb. 8, 2008
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; - The Penn State women's tennis team (1-3) dropped a tough match Friday to Marshall, ending the night with a 4-3 loss to the Thundering Herd. In doubles, senior Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) and sophomore Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) lost a close match to Kellie Schmitt and Karolina Soor, 8-7. Senior Katelyn BeVard (McLean, Va.) partnered with sophomore Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) and fell to Thaddea Lock and Isabell Raich, 8-5. Juniors Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) paired up against Jessica Keener and Yulia Kashelkina but lost 8-3. To win the match, Penn State needed to win four of the six singles matches. However, the Nittany Lions only came out on top in three. BeVard defeated Soor in a three-set match (6-0, 2-6, 6-3), Dohanics topped Lock (7-5, 6-0) and freshman Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) had a convincing defeat of Kashelkina (6-0, 6-3). Falling in singles were Shular who fell to Schmitt (6-3, 6-1), Holzberg who was defeated by Raich in a three-set match (6-4, 3-6, 6-1) and McCarthy who fell to Jeanne Schwartz (6-4, 6-3). "It's a disappointing loss for our team," said head coach Dawna Prevette. "We have an opportunity to make some adjustments and are looking forward to playing Yale on Sunday." Penn State faces the Yale Bulldogs on Sunday at 11 a.m. The dual match will take place at the Penn State Indoor Tennis Center and admission is free.
