Penn State Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Teams Victorious against St. Bonaventure

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. (Nov. 18, 2004) - Balance helped the Penn State men's and women's swimming and diving teams return from a three-week layoff to defeat St. Bonaventure in a double-dual meet Friday night in St. Bonaventure, N.Y.

The 17th-ranked Nittany Lion women had 12 different team members come away with first place finishes in a 172-90 win. And the Penn State men had 11 different men play roles in first place finishes in a 155-104 victory.

Sophomore Erin Morris (Ft. Wayne, Ind.) came away with two victories for the women. She took first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10 minutes, 3.40 seconds. She also won the 100 butterfly in 58.84.

Sophomore Megan Palera (Santa Maria, Calif.) won the 200 freestyle (1:55.98), senior Sara Shepherd (Nazareth, Pa.) took first in the 100 backstroke (59.30), junior Sarah Haupt (Carlisle, Pa.) won the 200 butterfly (2:08.22), freshman Lauren Preyss (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) took first in the 50 freestyle (24.58), senior Larissa Kavchok (Emmaus, Pa.) finished first in the 100 freestyle (52.68), sophomore Chelsea Frank (Bedford, N.H.) won the 200 backstroke (2:04.82) and senior Kerry Smith (Havertown, Pa.) took first place in the 500 freestyle (5:05.47).

Senior Deirdre Dlugonski (Washington, Pa.), sophomore Rachel Ahrenhold (Blue Bell, Pa.), sophomore Nikki Collins (Carmel, Ind.) and senior Jennifer Eberst (Clifton Park, N.Y.) also teamed up to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:39.24.

A senior and two freshmen paved the way for the Nittany Lion men. Senior Patrik Johansson (Lund, Sweden), and freshmen Josh Graham (Newport News, Va.) and Kyle Miranda (Louisville, Colo.) all came away with three wins each.

Miranda and Johansson were on the 200 freestyle relay team with freshman Sean Swanepoel (KZN, South Africa) and junior Chris Ippoliti (Berwyn, Pa.) that won with a time of 1:26.18.

Miranda and Johansson were also on the 200 medley relay team with freshman Bobby Franssen (Conestoga, Pa.) and senior Daryl Northrop (Verona, N.J.) that won in 1:36.17.

Miranda came away with an individual win in the 100 breaststroke (58.01), and Johansson won the 100 butterfly (51.24).

Graham won three events. He took away first place finishes in the 1000 freestyle (9:44.53), 500 freestyle (4:39.49) and the 200 IM (1:55.72).

Senior Dustin Thompson (Munster, Ind.) took first place in the 200 freestyle (1:45.38), junior Shawn McLin (Sinking Spring, Pa.) won the 100 backstroke (51.20), freshman Brad Roth (Kutztown, Pa.) finished first in the 200 butterfly (1:57.47) and freshman Sean Biedermann (Colorado Springs, Colo.) won the 200 backstroke (1:57.96).

Both the Penn State men's and women's swimming and diving teams will be back in action 3 p.m. Tuesday when they play host to West Chester at McCoy Natatorium.
