UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; October 25, 2006 - Both the men's and women's swimming and diving team will return to the pool competitively this weekend when both groups of Nittany Lions travel to Charlottesville, Va. to participate in a quad meet that will feature three other teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Nittany Lions will join host Virginia, as well as Virginia Tech and Clemson for the two-day event. The competition starts on Friday night, October 27 at 6:00 p.m. and continues on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
The women's team is coming off a 146.5-96.5 win over West Virginia in its first dual meet of the year last week. In that meet, the Nittany Lions won eight out of the 13 contested events. Highlights of that meet included Karie Haglund (Marietta, Ga.) swimming an NCAA provisional time in the 200 butterfly, Claire Hawley (Barnstable, Mass.) winning the 500 freestyle in her first collegiate meet since the 2004-05 season, and both divers winning one event apiece, Kimberlee Peifer (Camp Hill, Pa.) in the one-meter and Courtney Adlam (Ambler, Pa.) in the three-meter.
The men's team lost to West Virginia 137-104 but got a very strong performance from senior diver Mike Alderman (Arlington, Va.), who swept both springboard events and put up an NCAA Zone qualifying score on the one-meter. David Kraft (Vienna, Va.) also won the 1000 freestyle.
The other three women's teams participating in this quad meet are also coming off NCAA Championship appearances last year just like Penn State. Virginia placed 23rd, Clemson 28th and Virginia Tech 36th. The Nittany Lions were 19th a year ago. On the men's side, two of the other men's teams scored at NCAAs last year. Virginia finished 18th while Virginia Tech placed 27th. Penn State was 49th and Clemson did not score at NCAAs.
