UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State swimming and diving teams will host three opponents at the McCoy Natatorium this year, with John Hargis beginning his fifth season as head coach. The Nittany Lions will compete in a total of nine weekends during the 2012-13 season before vying for a Big Ten Championship in late February.
“My philosophy as a coach is to always schedule as tough of a schedule as I can,” said Hargis. “I want our kids racing the best as often as they can so that they’re comfortable later in the season, when they are racing the best. Every year, I think our schedule is stacked up against some of the top competition in the country. The way it’s set up, our kids are going to have the opportunity to race the best numerous times this season. And I think it’s going to make us better come February and March.”
The Lions kick off their preseason with the annual Blue-White Intrasquad meet on Oct. 12 at 4 p.m. The home event will prepare Penn State for its traditional season opening meet at West Virginia on Oct. 19 at 5 p.m. in Morgantown.
“We have a great home-and-home series against West Virginia,” said Hargis. “We’ve had it for years and years. We enjoy competing against WVU. Their coach, Vic Riggs, had done a phenomenal job down there and it’s always a great meet for us to kick of the season.”
A nearly month-long break from competition will bring the Nittany Lions back home to McCoy Natatorium for a dual against Villanova on Nov. 10. The squads will then face two back-to-back challenges when they travel to Indiana for a tri-meet with the Hoosiers and Virginia, and compete in the annual Georgia invite in the late weeks of November.
After resting for much of December, the divers will return to action in the Tennessee Collegiate Diving Invite on Jan. 3 at 11 a.m. in Knoxville. The same weekend, the swimming teams will travel to Naples, Fla. for a meet against North Carolina. January is packed full of competition for Penn State, with the Lions traveling the following weekend for a tri-meet against Arkansas and Missouri State on Jan. 12.
Navy and Towson will come to Happy Valley on Jan. 26 and Feb. 2, respectively, when Penn States hosts two consecutive home meets. The 2012 regular season will conclude for the Lions when the squads travel to Columbus, Ohio for the annual Ohio State Invite on Feb. 16 and 17.
The Penn State women will compete in the Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis, Minn. From Feb. 20-23, while the men travel to Bloomington, Ind. for the Big Tens on Feb. 27 to March 2. The women’s Last Chance Meet will take place on March 3 and the men will compete on March 10.
The NCAA Championships will begin in mid-March, with both sets of NCAA Zone A Diving Qualifying taking place March 15-16. For swimming, the two respective NCAA Championship meets at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis see the women competing from March 21-23 and the men competing from March 28-30.
