Women's Swimming & Diving Award Winners Announced

STATE COLLEGE, Pa., May 25, 2000 -- Head coach Bill Dorenkott has announced the Penn State women's swimming and diving award winners.

Junior Christina Stocki (Upper Holland, Pa.) was named as recipient of the Elizabeth McCoy Outstanding Swimmer Award, which recognizes the team member who has contributed to the most success of this year's team.

Senior Ame Bascomb (Victor, N.Y.) and sophomore Becky Crane (Newtown, Conn.) were selected as co-recipients of the Robert Galbraith Outstanding Diver Award, presented in honor of Penn State's 1936-1944 swimming and diving coach. This award is given to a diver for outstanding contributions through performance, loyalty, spirit and leadership.

Senior Sami Bausher (West Lawn, Pa.) and sophomore Alecia Kornacki (Simpsonville, S.C.) were selected as co-recipients of the Jerome Weinstein Coach's Award, dedicated in memory of enthusiastic supporter of women's swimming and Penn State's first swimming captain.

Junior Katie Anderson (Somerset, N.J.) received the 2000 Rosemary Balliett High Point Award, given to the swimmer who has accumulated the most points for the team throughout the season. Anderson was also named to the 1999-2000 GTE Academic All-District II Fall/Winter Women's At-Large team.

The 2000 Ellen Perry Academic Achievement Award is presented to one sophomore, one junior and one senior who has achieved the highest grade point average for the previous spring and fall semesters and recognizes Penn State's first woman's swim team coach, and current Senior Women's Administrator. The recipients include Sophomore Melinda Rehm (State College, Pa.) with a 3.43 grade point average, Anderson with a 3.96 grade point average, and senior Tasha Kulka (State College, Pa.) with a 3.93 grade point average.

Sophomore Jennelle Ritchie (Cherry Hill, N.J.) was recognized as the Fran McDermid Leadership Award winner, which is presented to the student-athlete who best displays spirit, athlete, leadership, performance and dedication.

Three women received the Karen Walizer Service Award, senior Melanie Jackson (Portland, Ore.), Kulka, and senior Kelli Keane (Library, Pa.), which is presented to the swimmers who have contributed to making the Penn State community a better place.

Kulka was also named as recipient of the Jessica Hoy Award, presented in memory of Jessica Hoy who battled leukemia, and is presented to the swimmer or diver who exemplifies the courage and personality that were apart of Jessica Hoy's life.

Penn State finished the 1999-2000 season with a fourth place showing in the Big Ten Championships, their highest finish in the event, and five school records.
