Collins Repeats as All-American with New School Record in 1650 Free

  • MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.; March 10, 2007 ¨C In the final swim of her collegiate career, senior Nikki Collins (Carmel, Ind.) finished seventh in the 1650 freestyle on the final night of the NCAA Championships on Saturday to repeat as an All-American, breaking her own school record in that event in the process. Freshman Kailey Morris (Lewistown, Pa.) also picked up points for the Nittany Lions as she tied for 13th place in the 200 butterfly and the Nittany Lions finished in 26th place at the NCAA Championships with 30.5 points.

    Collins, who swam her previous career best time and school record of 16:13.35 in the 1650 free at last year's NCAA Championships to finish in sixth place and become an All-American, shaved .91 of a second off that time to finish in seventh place in 16: 12.44 and once again become an All-American. Claire Hawley (Barnstable, Mass.) also swam in the 1650 free and finished 37th in 16:39.56.

    Morris picked up 3.5 points by tying for 13th in the 200 fly in a time of 1:58.74. She swam her career best time of 1:58.27 in the morning prelims. Also in the prelims, Kelly Nelson (West Chester, Pa.) finished just outside of qualifying for the consolation final as she finished 18th in 1:58.85. Karie Haglund (Marietta, Ga.) was just behind her in 19th place in 1:59.03.

    In other events, freshman Daphne Skelos (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) finished 22nd in the 200 backstroke in a career best time of 1: 57.86. Jessica Barnes (Glenmoore, Pa.) also finished 44th in 2:02.88. Kaitlin O'Brien (Caldwell, N.J.), who finished ninth in the 400 IM last night, placed 28th in the 200 breaststroke in a new career best time of 2: 16.18.

    Penn State's 26th place finish with 30.5 points marks the seventh straight year that the Nittany Lions have placed and scored points at the NCAA Championships.
