UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (Feb. 21, 2004) The 12th-ranked Penn State women¡¯s swimming and diving team broke two school records Saturday on its way to capturing second place at the Big Ten Championships with a score of 590.5 points at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.

Michigan became the third different team in as many years to win the event. The Wolverines finished with 604.5, Indiana was third (563.5), Wisconsin took fourth (503) and Minnesota rounded out the top five (412.5). Purdue took sixth (337.5), Northwestern was seventh (222), Ohio State came in eighth (196), Iowa was ninth (152), Michigan State took 10th (123) and Illinois finished 11th (107.5).

The Nittany Lions held the lead for most of the final seven events, but they don¡¯t compete in platform diving, which enabled Michigan to score 34 points in the event to tie Penn State with 566.5 points heading into the 400-yard freestyle relay, the final event of the championships.

Michigan won the event with a time of 3:18.95 to clinch its 14th Big Ten Title. Penn State¡¯s team of Larissa Kavchok (Emmaus, Pa.), Amberle Biederman (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Deirdre Dlugonski (Washington, Pa.) and Lauren Semchyshen (New Fairfield, Conn.) took seventh in the 400 freestyle relay with an NCAA ¡°B¡± cut time of 3:23.49.

Freshman Margy Keefe (Cincinnati, Ohio) shattered the Penn State school record in the 1,650 freestyle with an NCAA ¡°A¡± cut time of 16:16.98 to take fifth place in the final day¡¯s first final. She was followed closely by teammates Sally Anderson (Somerset, N.J.) and Megan Palera (Santa Maria, Calif.), who finished sixth (16:26.26, NCAA ¡°B¡± cut) and seventh (16:29.30, NCAA ¡°B¡± cut), respectively. Keefe broke Regan Stacey¡¯s 10-year-old school record of 16:26.02, which was set in 1994. The threesome helped Penn State leapfrog Michigan into first place.

Biedermann, who is a sophomore, broke her own school and Big Ten Championship records by swimming and winning the 200 butterfly with an NCAA ¡°A¡± cut time of 1:57.87. Junior Jennifer Eberst (Clifton Park, N.Y.) followed her to a 13th-place finish in 2:04.20 to put the Nittany Lions in first place by 34 points with two events to go.

Sophomore Sarah Haupt (Carlisle, Pa.) and freshman Erin Morris (Ft.Wayne, Ind.) took fourth (1:59.80, NCAA ¡°B¡± cut) and fifth (1:59.90, NCAA ¡°B¡± cut), respectively, in the 200 backstroke. Junior Sara Shepherd (Nazareth, Pa.) finished eighth with an NCAA ¡°B¡± cut time of 2:00.78 to give Penn State a 48.5 point lead over Michigan with four events to go.

Dlugonski, a junior, then took eighth in the 100 freestyle with an NCAA ¡°B¡± cut time of 50.57.

Junior Courtney Stanchock (Bloomsburg, Pa.) and senior Kristen Woodring (Sinking Spring, Pa.) then gave the Nittany Lions valuable team points in the 200 breaststroke, Stanchock finished third with an NCAA ¡°B¡± cut time of 2:14.30 and Woodring took fifth with an NCAA ¡°B¡± cut time of 2:15.23. Penn State held a 23-point lead with three events to go.

The Nittany Lions won a total of five of the 21 events during the championships including the 200 and 400 medley relays, the 200 butterfly, the 100 breaststroke and the 100 backstroke. They also set school and Big Ten Championship records in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:39.22 on Wednesday night¡¯s first event.

Biedermann, Haupt and Woodring all won three events and Dlugonski won two.
