UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (Feb. 20, 2004) - The Penn State women's swimming and diving team came on strong late in Day 3 of the Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships Friday at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center to put themselves in good position for a Big Ten Championship.

The Nittany Lions picked up valuable points in the final two swim meets and the three-meter diving competition to put themselves in second place with 396.5 points.

Indiana jumped two spots in the standings for a hold on first-place with 417.5, just 21 points ahead of Penn State. Michigan is third with 396, Wisconsin is fourth with 343 and host Minnesota rounds out the top five with 287. Purdue is sixth (225), Northwestern is seventh (137), Ohio State is eighth (132), Iowa is ninth (109), Michigan State is 10th (90) and Illinois is 11th (69).

Senior Kristen Woodring (Sinking Spring, Pa.) continued her assault on the championships by winning two events on the day and third of the championships. She won the 100-yard breaststroke with an NCAA "A" cut time of 1:00.35. She won the event for the second time in three years (she did not compete in 2003). She also owns five of the top six times in the 100 breaststroke in Big Ten history. Woodring was on the 200 medley relay team that set a Big Ten Championship record on Wednesday.

Woodring also swam with sophomore Sarah Haupt (Carlisle, Pa.), sophomore Amberle Biedermann (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and junior Deirdre Dlugonski to help win the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:36.56 (NCAA "A" cut) earlier in the day. It marked the third straight year Penn State has won the event.

Haupt also won the 100 backstroke with an NCAA "A" cut time of 54.01. Helping to push Haupt and earn more valuable points were freshman Erin Morris (Ft. Wayne, Ind.), who finished sixth in 56.10 (NCAA "B" cut), and junior Jennifer Eberst (Clifton Park, N.Y.), who took ninth with an NCAA "B" cut time of 56.07.

Also in the 100 breaststroke, Stanchock followed Woodring to a fifth-place showing with an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:02.12.

The Nittany Lions had three swimmers score points in the 100 butterfly as well. Biedermann placed second in 53.63 (NCAA "A" cut), Haupt took 11th in 55.63 and Eberst touched the wall in 55.96, good for 13th place.

Freshman Megan Palera (Santa Maria, Calif.) finished sixth in the 400 IM with a time of 4:19.31, while senior Sally Anderson (Somerset, N.J.) and junior Larissa Kavchok (Emmaus, Pa.) took eighth (1:50.45, NCAA "B" cut) and 15th (1:51.07), respectively.

The Penn State divers aided the team in jumping from third to second-place to end the day. Sophomores Alison Riccobono (Ypsilanti, Mich.) and Lisa Silvestri (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) took third and fourth, respectively. Riccobono finished with a score of 522.70 and Silvestri had 516.15.

The championships will resume at 12 p.m. Saturday with seven events to go. The finals begin at 8 p.m. with the 1,650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, platform diving and 400 freestyle relay yet to be contested.

The Nittany Lions do not compete in platform diving.
