BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (Jan. 29, 2005) ¨C The 14th-ranked Penn State women¡¯s swimming and diving team extended a slim lead with a strong second day in its final regular season dual meet to beat Big Ten rival, and No. 19, Indiana 211-158 in a two-day event that wrapped up Saturday afternoon at Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
The Nittany Lions did it with experience and youth, as senior Kristen Woodring (Sinking Spring, Pa.) won two more events on Saturday to bring her two-day win total to four events, and freshman Lauren Preyss (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) won two events with NCAA provisional times.
Penn State wrapped up its regular season with a 5-1 dual meet record. The Nittany Lions now have off until Indiana hosts the Big Ten Tournament Feb. 16-19.
Woodring and teammates Sarah Haupt (Carlisle, Pa.), Amberle Biedermann (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Deirdre Dlugonski (Washington, Pa.) won the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3 minutes, 47.36 seconds. Woodring also won the 200 breaststroke in 2:18.96.
Biedermann also won the 200 butterfly (2:03.81), and Dlugonski took first place in the 50 freestyle (23.87).
Preyss had a strong second day, as she came away with wins in the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle in NCAA ¡°B¡± cut times of 1:49.76 and 51.27, respectively.
Sophomore Erin Morris (Ft. Wayne, Ind.) also earned valuable points for Penn State as she won the 200 IM (2:04.62), and then took second in the 200 backstroke with an NCAA ¡°B¡± cut time of 2:00.90.
Sophomore Margy Keefe (Cincinnati, Ohio) achieved her second NCAA ¡°B¡± cut time of the weekend when she won the 500 freestyle in 4:50.93.
Senior Alison Riccobono (Ypsilanti, Mich.) took fifth on the 1-meter board (243.03) and third on the 3-meter board (313.95). Senior Corey Pagnotta (Westport, Conn.) took sixth on the 1-meter board (239.25), and fifth on the 3-meter board (276.68).
