No. 14 Women's Swimming Team Leads No. 19 Indiana After First Night of Regular Season Finale
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (Jan. 28, 2005) - The 14th-ranked Penn State women's swimming and diving team only won three of eight events, but the Nittany Lions' depth gave them an 84-62 advantage over No. 19 Indiana after the first-session of a two-day dual meet in Bloomington, Ind. Eight Penn State swimmers achieved NCAA "B" cut times in the eight events, including two by senior Kristen Woodring (Sinking Spring, Pa.), who led the way with two wins. The second, and final, session of the 21-event dual meet with the Hoosiers will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. Woodring, and Penn State, kicked off the dual meet when she and junior Sarah Haupt (Carlisle, Pa.), junior Amberle Biedermann (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and senior Deirdre Dlugonski (Washington, Pa.) won the 200-yard medley relay with a "B" cut time of 1 minute, 42.43 seconds. Woodring also won the 100 breaststroke with a "B" cut time of 1:02.28. Sophomore Margy Keefe (Cincinnati, Ohio) aided the Nittany Lions by winning the 1650 freestyle with an NCAA provisional time of 16:29.69. She was followed by sophomore Nikki Collins (Carmel, Ind.) and junior Patty Murphy (Medford, N.J.) in second and third place with NCAA provisional times of 16:37.18 and 16:51.93, respectively. Haupt had a second NCAA provisional time by finishing second in the 100 backstroke in 55.89. Senior Courtney Stanchock (Washington, Pa.) took second in the 100 breaststroke with an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:03.82.
