Women's Swimming Opens Big Ten Battle in Indiana
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The No. 18 ranked Penn State women's swimming team opened up competition against Big Ten foes #19 Indiana and Michigan State by winning all five swim events contested. The first session of the double dual was filled with numerous season bests and NCAA consideration times for the Nittany Lions. The Nittany Lions began the double dual by winning the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Deirdre Dlugonski (Washington, Pa.), Piper Chamberlin (Grand Junction, Colo.), Kristen Weinhold (Durham N.C.) and Katie Hostetler (Chambersburg, Pa.) swam a NCAA provisional and season best time of 1:32.72, which outdistanced Indiana by almost three seconds. In the second event of the night, the 500-yard freestyle, Sally Anderson (Somerset, N.J.) earned a victory, a NCAA provisional mark and season best time of 4:52.37. Erin Mulshenock (New Castle, Del.) and Corrie Clark (Malvern, Pa.) teamed up to finish one-two in the 200-yard individual medley. Their times of 2:02.14 and 2:02.40 were both season bests and NCAA provisional times. In the 50-yard freestyle Dlugonski, the Big Ten Athlete of the Week, and three other Lions took the top four places. Dlugonski's time of 23.50 added to Penn State's streak of seasonal bests and NCAA provisional times. In the final event of the session, Penn State once again came away victorious in a relay event. The team of Katie Bruzda (Latrobe, Pa.), Kristen Woodring (Sinking Spring, Pa.), Clark and Dlugonski bettered their previous best time with a new season best of 3:42.68. The Nittany Lions will look to continue their winning ways tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. After the morning session there will a break until the third session begins at 3:30 p.m. --LIONS--
