UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (Jan. 24, 2004) ¨C The 13th-ranked Penn State women¡¯s swimming and diving team held off a hard-charging Indiana squad to defeat the nation¡¯s 12th-ranked team 188-180 in a two-day meet Friday and Saturday at McCoy Natatorium.
Indiana needed to take first and second place in the 400-yard freestyle relay to tie the Nittany Lions. The Hoosiers took first, but one of their relay teams was disqualified for a false start to secure the Penn State relay teams second and third place for the final event and the meet victory.
Sophomore Amberle Biedermann (Colorado Springs, Co.) led the Nittany Lions with three victories and three NCAA ¡°B¡± cut times. She helped teammates Sarah Haupt (Carlisle, Pa.), Kristen Woodring (Sinking Spring, Pa.) and Deirdre Dlugonski (Washington, Pa.) win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:42.52 (NCAA ¡°B¡± cut). Biedermann also won the 100 butterfly in 55.11 (NCAA ¡°B¡± cut) and the 200 butterfly in 2:00.67 (NCAA ¡°B¡± cut).
Junior Alison Riccobono (Ypsilanti, Mich.) had an outstanding meet on the one-meter and three-meter diving boards by winning both events with scores of 283.65 and 309.30, respectively. She won on the three-meter board by more than 23 points.
In addition to her win in the 200 medley relay, Woodring also won the 100 breaststroke with a ¡°B¡± cut time of 1:02.61.
Also picking up wins for Penn State were senior Sally Anderson (Somerset, N.J.), junior Kerry Smith (Havertown, Pa.), freshman Margy Keefe (Cincinnati, Ohio) and junior Sara Shepherd (Nazareth, Pa.).
Anderson won the 500 freestyle with a ¡°B¡± cut time of 4:50.77. Keefe and two other freshman, Nikki Collins (Carmel, Ind.) and Patty Murphy (Medford, N.J.) finished second, sixth and seventh, respectively, behind Anderson with ¡°B¡± cut times as well.
Smith won the 200 freestyle in 1:51.10, Keefe took first in the 1,650 freestyle in 16:36.03 (NCAA ¡°B¡± cut) and Shepherd won the 200 backstroke in 2:01.87. Keefe¡¯s time in the 1,650 freestyle was good for sixth best in school history.
The Penn State women¡¯s swimming and diving team will be back in action when it competes against Rutgers 1 p.m. Saturday on Senior Day at McCoy Natatorium.
