ATHENS, Ga. - Alabama's Lane Bassham and Auburn's Matt Bricker picked up individual event victories on the second day of the 2003 Georgia Diving Invitational at the Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens. Georgia's Todd Avery finished sixth in the men's 3-meter final.
Bassham, who is the older sister of Georgia diver Brooke Bassham, won the women's 1-meter event with an overall score of 555.10. Ashley Rubenstein from Auburn finished second with a score of 541.40, followed by Tennessee's Lauren McCalley, who was the leader heading into the finals. Brooke Bassham just missed the finals by finishing 14th with a score of 232.25 at the end of prelims.
Bricker was in third place heading into the evening finals and amassed an overall score of 597.35 to win the 3-meter championship. Tennessee's Phillip Jones took second with a score of 594.75, followed by Andy Bradley from South Carolina in third. Avery's overall score of 512.70 earned the Bulldog sixth place. Georgia's Kris Daugherty was in 11th place heading into his set of voluntary dives, but fell to 13th with a score of 173.80. He was just more than eight points away from reaching the 3-meter finals.
In what could be considered a preview to the Southeastern Conference championship, eight of the nine conference schools that sponsor swimming and diving are participating in the invitational, and 11 of the top 12 finishers on the women's 1-meter and 10 of the top 12 divers on the men's 3-meter were SEC divers.
This year's invitational once again featured the "Bulldog Shootout," which has become a fan favorite. The "Bulldog Shootout" involves the top-six finishers from the 1-meter competition. Each diver performs one dive in Round 1, and the diver with the lowest score is eliminated. The same procedure takes place through five rounds, and the final diver remaining is the shootout champion.
In an all-Tennessee final, Sanger hit her final dive and received a score of 52.50 to top fellow Vol McCalley to win the 1-meter Bulldog Shootout. McCalley scored 46.80 in the final round to finish second. Lane Bassham, who won the 1-meter competition earlier in the day finished third.
The Georgia Diving Invitational will conclude Sunday with the men's and women's platform competition beginning at 11 a.m. Results and live video can be found at www.georgiadogs.com.
