2009-10 (JUNIOR YEAR): Media Guide Bio
Set season best times in three events at the Big Ten Championships (2/17-20), highlighted by making the "C Finals" in the 100 butterfly (21st, 55.45, prelim). Also swam the 100 (57.15) and 200 (2:01.44) backstroke ... Solid at Ohio State (1/29-30), placing third in the 100 butterfly (56.27) and 400 medley relay (3:48.79), sixth in the 200 backstroke (2:07.70) and 400 freestyle relay (3:34.93) and eighth in the 100 backstroke (59.25) ... Finished sixth in the 200 medley relay (1:47.32), seventh in the 200 backstroke (2:05.78), eighth in the 100 butterfly (57.94) and 12th in the 100 backstroke (59.96) at the Pittsburgh Quad Meet (1/15-16) ... Busy at the prestigious Ohio State Invitational (12/4-6), taking part in the 50 freestyle (24.81), 100 backstroke (58.59), 200 backstroke (2:10.41) and 200 freestyle relay (1:39.13). Most impressive showings came in the 100 butterfly (12th, 57.26), 400 freestyle relay (11th, 3:33.94) and 400 medley relay (10th, 3:52.73) ... Placed third in the 200 medley relay (1:45.97) and 400 freestyle relay (3:37.23), fourth in the 100 butterfly (58.49), sixth in the 400 medley relay (3:54.37) and eighth in the 100 (58.70) and 200 (2:06.17) backstroke against Virginia (11/20-21) in the home opener ... Meet at Virginia Tech (10/31) was highlighted by fourth-place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:47.32) while finishing sixth in the 100 butterfly (58.46) and 200 backstroke (2:08.87) and seventh in the 100 backstroke (58.77) ... Finished third and fourth, respectively in the 400 medley relay (3:54.22) and 200 backstroke (2:07.03) against West Virginia/Colgate (10/24) ... Opened season at St. Bonaventure (10/13) with a pair of second-place finishes, in the 200 backstroke (2:08.77) and 200 medley relay (1:50.76) while also swimming the 200 freestyle relay (1:38.23).
2008-09 (SOPHOMORE YEAR): Saw significant action in second collegiate season ... At the Big Ten Championships, finished 39th in the 100 backstroke (57.40, preliminary), 31st in the 200 backstroke (2:02.61, preliminary) and 21st in the 100 butterfly (54.93, preliminary) ... In dual meet against Ohio State, was third in the 100 backstroke (58.98), 200 backstroke (2:03.59) and 100 butterfly (57.25) while placing fourth in the 200 medley relay (1:47.80) and fifth in the 400 medley relay (3:53.21) ... A week earlier against Rutgers, placed second in the 200 medley relay (1:46.97) and sixth in the 100 backstroke (59.79) and 100 butterfly (1:00.47) while also swimming in the 200 backstroke ... Against Villanova/Pittsburgh/Maryland, was fourth in the 200 (1:47.08) and 400 (3:54.96) medley relays, seventh in the 100 butterfly (57.99) and 10th in the 200 backstroke (2:09.65) ... Set numerous season-best times at the Ohio State Invitational including the 200 backstroke (1:59.61, fifth overall), 100 butterfly (54.72, fourth), 200 freestyle relay (1:36.24, eighth), 400 freestyle relay (3:28.77, eighth), 200 medley relay (1:45.73, 10th) and 400 medley relay (3:47.16, fifth) ... Was seventh in the 100 backstroke (58.64), ninth in the 200 backstroke (2:05.93), seventh in the 100 butterfly (57.51) and sixth in the 200 medley relay (1:48.95) against Virginia/Florida State ... Swam in three races at Southern Methodist, all fifth-place finishes: 100 butterfly (57.93), 200 freestyle relay (1:40.24) and 200 medley relay (1:52.70) ... Only three races a day earlier at Texas A&M were the 200 butterfly (sixth overall, 2:06.53), 400 freestyle relay (sixth, 3:35.17) and 400 medley relay (fourth, 3:51.43) ... At first home meet against Richmond (10/24), posted fourth-place finish in the 100 backstroke (59.90) and third in the 100 butterfly (58.72) ... In season opener at West Virginia, was third in the 200 backstroke (2:07.48) and fourth in the 200 medley relay (1:51.17) ... Named an Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
2007-08 (FRESHMAN YEAR): Swam mostly in backstroke events in first season as a Nittany Lion ... Placed 22nd in the 200 backstroke and 35th in the 100 backstroke at the Big Ten Championships. Also participated in the 100 butterfly, earning 33rd in the conference ... Overall, had one third-place finish, four fourth place nods and ended in fifth twice ... In first meet against West Virginia, her 400-medley team took fourth ... Swam in fourth in the 200 freestyle against Florida Gulf Coast ... Excelled at Pittsburgh, posting a fifth, sixth and seventh-place mark in the quad meet ... Took fourth in the 100 backstroke against West Chester ... Earned third in the 100 butterfly versus Rutgers.
HIGH SCHOOL: Swam for four years at The Pennington School in Pennington, N.J. ... Won the state championship in the 200 freestyle as a sophomore, won the state championship in the 100 backstroke as a junior and was the state champion in the 100 butterfly as a senior ... Took first-place in the 100 fly at Eastern's her junior year and then placed third in both the 100 back and 100 fly at Easterns as a senior ... Was a Scholastic All-American.
PERSONAL: Full name is Lauren Christine Smart ... Born on February 10, 1989 in Langhorne, Pa. ... The daughter of Greg and Teresa Smart and has an older brother, Greg (22) and a younger sister, Lindsey (18) ... Greg plays basketball and is also on the track team at Dickinson College ... An elementary education major.
