Four Nittany Lion Softball Players Selected To GTE Academic All-District Team

Pracht A Repeat Selection

STATE COLLEGE, Pa.; May 11, 2000 -- Penn State led all schools in District II with four selections to the GTE Academic All-District Softball Team, including repeat honoree Terra Pracht.

Senior pitcher Jaci Kalp (Greensburg, Pa.), junior second baseman Allison Medellin (San Pablo, Calif.), senior shortstop Pracht (Hawthorne, Calif.) and junior outfielder Karen Gulini (Easton, Pa.) comprise the Penn State contingent, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Athletes nominated for the award must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key reserve. All four Lions are eligible for selection to the GTE Academic All-America Team, which will be announced June 8.

The quartet has helped Penn State to a 34-15 record heading into today's first round match-up with Purdue at the Big Ten Tournament in Iowa City, Iowa. The Lions are one win from tying their school record for victories in a season, established last year with a 35-22 mark.

A kinesiology major with a 3.71 gpa, Kalp led the Nittany Lions with a 17-7 record and a 1.54 earned run average. The winningest pitcher in school history with 49 victories, she has 17 complete games and 10 shutouts this season. Selected third team All-Big Ten, she has pitched two no-hitters in her college career.

A mechanical engineering major with a 3.64 gpa, Medellin started at second base in all 49 games for the Nittany Lions. A first team All-Big Ten choice, she is the team's fourth-leading hitter with a .336 batting average while scoring 21 runs with 18 RBI's. She led NCAA Division I last season with no strikeouts in 159 at bats and went 277 at bats without a strikeout.

A repeat selection to the Academic All-District II team, Pracht is a marketing major with a 3.49 gpa. She was the Nittany Lions' Most Valuable Player last season and is batting .289 with 10 runs scored and 18 runs batted in. A third team all-conference pick, Pracht also has five doubles and one home run.

The Nittany Lions' leading hitter with a .397 batting average, Gulini is a secondary education major with a 3.62 gpa. She was named first team All-Big Ten Wednesday night. The second-leading base stealer in NCAA Division I, she has 25 stolen bases in 31 attempts this season. She has scored 28 runs with three doubles and 10 runs batted in. She is second on Penn State's career list with 65 stolen bases.
