Lions Drop 8-0 Decision to Iowa In Softball

IOWA CITY, Iowa; April 24, 2004- After a 14 inning marathon the previous night, Penn State ran out of gas vs. Iowa Saturday dropping an 8-0 decision to the Hawkeyes. The Nittany Lions are now 19-28 (4-8 Big Ten), while Iowa is 32-17 (10-2 Big Ten).

Play was scoreless until the third inning when Penn State senior Marisa Hanson (Victoria, Texas) walked lead-off hitter Natalie Johnson. Two straight bunts for singles by Kylie Murray and Stacy May loaded the bases for pitcher Lisa Birocci, who reached first on an error, scoring Johnson. Three more hits in the inning drove in a total of seven Hawkeye runs, giving Iowa a 7-0 lead on Penn State heading into the bottom of the third inning.

The Nittany Lions found trouble again in the sixth inning, with an error and two straight singles loading the bases with one out in the inning. A sacrifice fly by Emily Gerlick scored Amanda Hentges for the 8-0 lead to end the game in six innings.

Freshman Jen Williams (Stillwater, Okla.) managed the Lions¡¯ only hit, pushing her hit-streak to five-straight games.

Penn State travels to Illinois today for a doubleheader in Champaign vs. the Illini on Sunday, April 25. First pitch is at noon.
