ANN ARBOR, Mich.; April 11, 2004- The Penn State softball team finished a tough trip to No. 9 Michigan 0-2 Sunday, losing the first game 7-0 and the second 2-0. The Lions will host Northwestern on Friday, April 16, at 6 p.m. to continue their Big Ten slate. Penn State is now 16-23 (2-4 Big Ten) on the season, while Michigan raises its record to 33-6 (8-0 Big Ten).

Despite beginning the day with a single from freshman Meghan Wolfer (Northampton, Pa.) and another from junior Leigh Murray (Fairfax Station, Va.) in the first inning of game one, the Lions couldn??t put any runs on the board. Penn State stranded multiple runners in the first game and amassed five hits, but to no avail as a 3-for-4 effort from Michigan??s Jessica Merchant helped propel the Wolverines to a 7-0 win in game one. Penn State??s redshirt-junior Missy Beseres (Golden Valley, Pa.) took the loss in 4.1 innings, and was relieved by senior Marisa Hanson (Victoria, Texas), who threw 1.2 innings to end the ballgame. Beseres now stands at 7-12 on the year, each had one strikeout.

Redshirt-senior Shana Riggleman (Seaford, Pa.) pitched a complete game in the second showdown of the doubleheader but still took the loss, 2-1, for her first defeat of the year. She is now 4-1. Penn State senior catcher Kate Gentile (Endicott, N.Y.) managed Penn State??s only hit of game two as Michigan??s Nicole Motycka threw a tough game complete with eight strikeouts to earn the win.

Penn State next hosts Northwestern Friday, April 16, at 6 p.m. and Saturday, April 17, at noon at Nittany Lion Field. The Lions then welcome fellow land grant school Michigan State to Happy Valley Sunday, April 18, for a doubleheader at noon.
