Penn State Softball Downs St. Francis In Game One Of Doubleheader
University Park, Pa., April 7, 2004 - The Nittany Lions jumped to an early lead Wednesday evening in game one of a doubleheader and never looked back defeating St. Francis (Pa.) 8-0 in 5 innings. Penn State improves to 15-21 overall (2-2 Big Ten). Penn State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when freshmen Jen Williams (Stillwater, Okla.) and Meghan Wolfer (Northampton, Pa.) scored for the Nittany Lions. In the bottom of the second, Penn State extended their lead to 5-0 on a pair of doubles by Williams and Wolfer. Junior Leigh Murray (Fairfax Station, Va.) hit a line drive homerun to left centerfield in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Nittany Lions a commanding 7-0 lead. The homerun was Murray¡¯s team leading fifth and Penn State¡¯s first home homerun. A pair of singles by sophomore Destinie Chavez (San Leandro, Calif.) and freshman Natasha Chouinard (Santee, Calif.) put two runners on base for the Nittany Lions in the bottom of the fifth. Pitch runner Kelsey Francisco (State College, Pa.) and Chouinard advanced on a double steal. With runners in scoring position, Williams hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring Francisco from third and ending the game. Williams had two RBI¡¯s in the game and her eighth of the season. Penn State senior Shana Riggleman (Seaford, Del.) picked up the win improving to 4-0 on the season. Riggleman struck out five in five innings of play.
