Hanson Named Big Ten Softball Pitcher of the Week

STATE COLLEGE, Pa., March 14, 2003 ¡ª Penn State¡¯s Marisa Hanson (Victoria, Texas/Victoria) was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week which was recently announced. She is just the second Nittany Lion in the history of the program to garner the accolade.

Hanson went 2-0, including earning the decision in the 4-3 upset of then-No. 14 Florida State, in 9.2 innings of work at the Seminole Invitational while allowing just three hits and no runs with seven strikeouts. She also held opposing batters to a .111 average. Hanson pitched all four extra innings in the 11-inning game against FSU to the Lions to victory. She combined for the shutout over Rutgers, posting her second shared shutout of the season.

The team¡¯s top pitcher, Hanson leads the Lions with a 0.67 earned run average in 73.1 innings pitched and has struck out a team-best 51 batters. Owning a 6-4 overall record, she is also 8-11 over teams ranked in the top 25 in three years as a Nittany Lion.

Tanis Ambelang is the only other Lion to be named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week. She earned the honor the week of April 4, 1999.
