Softball Defeats Toledo 5-1, Falls to Fresno State in Bulldog Classic Finale, 8-2

  • FRESNO, Calif., March 11, 2007 ¡ª Penn State split two games on the final day of the Bulldog Classic. The Lions defeated Toledo this morning, 5-1, but dropped the final game to host Fresno State, 8-2. The loss gives Penn State a 2-3 record in the Bulldog Classic and drops its overall record to 8-10. The Lions now have a couple days off before traveling to Fullerton, Calif. for the Judi Garman Classic where they will take on Cal State-Fullerton and DePaul on March 15 at 9:15 p.m . and 11:30 p.m. ET, respectively and Texas at 2:15 p.m. on March 16. Depending on the pool results, the Lions will either play in the championship or the consolation bracket on March 17 and 18.

    Senior Meghan Wolfer (Northampton, Pa.) led Penn State in hitting at the Bulldog Classic, finishing 6-13 (.462) with two RBI. Both RBI came against BYU and are her first RBI since the 2005 season. Danielle Kinley (Carlsbad , Calif.) also had a solid tournament, hitting .375 (6-for-16) with two doubles and five RBI.

    Fresno State

    Jen Acunto (Hollywood, Fla.) gave the Lions a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after getting walked. After a throwing error when she tried to steal second, Acunto was able to head home and tally the Lions' first run.

    Fresno State scored seven runs in the third inning to take a 7-1 lead. The Bulldogs erupted for six hits, including RBI doubles from Lisamarie Coronado and Michelle Palazuelos.

    The Nittany Lions made a small dent in the score in the fourth inning. Hollee Haines (Riverside, Calif.) earned a walk and Kelsey Francisco (State College, Pa.) stepped in to run for her. Francisco stole second and advanced to third when Kayce Zielinski grounded out. Francisco crossed home plate after Bulldog pitcher Robin Mackin threw a wild pitch into the backstop.

    Fresno State pushed the lead back to six in the fourth inning when Jenna Cervantez crushed a home run over the left field wall.

    Toledo

    Toledo got on the board first, scoring one run in the top of the third inning, but Penn State answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Danielle Kinley (Carlsbad, Calif.) hit her team-leading 15th RBI of the season to score Acunto from second base.

    The Nittany Lions made the score 2-1 in the fourth when Shana Madura (Slate Hill, N.Y.) scored off an Acunto sacrifice fly.

    In the bottom of the sixth inning, Ashley Griffith (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) hit a bases-loaded triple to break open the game and give Penn State a 5-1 cushion. Jenn Reynolds (Clovis, Calif.) got hit by a pitch to start the inning and Wolfer walked to put runners on first and second. Acunto came to bat and got her seventh hit of the tournament to load the bases. Freshman Griffith then smacked her first extra-base hit of the season, a triple to the right field wall, to give the Lions the final margin.
