Penn State Softball Loses 4-0 to No. 17 Oregon

COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS; February 27, 2004- Penn State's softball team fell to 0-6 Friday, losing to its sixth-straight Top 25 opponent, No. 17 Oregon, 4-0 at the Aggie Invitational II at Texas A&M. The Lions meet host No. 23 Texas A&M this afternoon to continue action.

Penn State had trouble getting anything started offensively in the first few innings. In the third inning, Oregon got on the board when Jenn Poore hit a double to begin the inning. Poore advanced to third on a sacrifice from Breanna Sabol and scored when Ashley Richards hit a RBI single to make it 1-0 Oregon.

The Ducks had a big fifth inning, scoring three runs highlighted by a triple from Kristi Leiter that scored two Duck baserunners. Heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, Oregon led 4-1.

In the fifth, Penn State threatened to take a cut out of Oregon's lead when first baseman Steph Viola (Minersville, Pa.) laid down a bunt and made it safely to first base with no throw. Scarlett Neal (Huntingdon Beach, Calif.) reached first on a fielder??s choice after an error on the play moved Viola to second. Sophomore third baseman Destinie Chavez (San Leandro, Calif.) advanced the runners with a sacrifice, but that's where they would end the inning after catcher Kate Gentile (Endicott, N.Y.) popped one up to the Ducks?? catcher.

Redshirt-junior Shana Riggleman (Seaford, Del.) made her first appearance of the season after injurying her knee in the fall, replacing Hanson at the top of the sixth inning. Hanson took the loss for the day with four hits.

The Lions loaded the bases in the sixth with no outs, but Duck's pitcher Amy Harris struck out two Lions and Viola hit a fly ball to right for the third out to end the inning. The score remained 4-0 Oregon through the end of seven innings, giving the Lions their sixth loss of the season in as many games and all against teams ranked in the USA Today/NFCA Top 25.

Penn State meets host No. 23 Texas A&M this afternoon at 4:45 p.m. CT. to continue their action at the Aggie Invitational II.
