LAS CRUCES, N.M. - A nine-run third inning propelled Texas Tech to a 14-3 win over Penn State softball Saturday afternoon at the Troy Cox Classic in Las Cruces, N.M.
Penn State continues its doubleheader against New Mexico State at 4 p.m. ET Saturday afternoon.
Karlie Habitz (Newhall, Calif.) sent out a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning, the first of her career. Junior Alyssa Sovereign (La Canada, Calif.) scored on the blast after drawing a walk. Penn State posted its third run in the bottom of the third inning. Alicia Walker (p singled and advanced to second on a missed throw by the first baseman before hustling the final 120 feet after Kailyn Johnson sent a hard drive back up through the middle.
Macy Jones (Ashburn, Pa.) relieved starter Christy Von Pusch (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) in the third and tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless play while allowing just four hits. Jones also added three strikeouts to her season total. The start was Von Pusch's first of her collegiate career.
