STATE COLLEGE, Pa., August 21, 2003 - After a spectacular performance at the Nordic Cup with the U.S. Under-21 National Team, Penn State women's soccer senior Joanna Lohman (Silver Spring, Md.) appears in this week's issue of Sports Illustrated dated Aug. 25 in the "Faces in the Crowd" section. Lohman netted both team goals en route to the U.S. team's unprecedented fifth-straight title. Lohman ended the tournament with an outstanding three goals, including her two scores in the 2-1 championship game win over Sweden. Her other goal came in pool play as the U.S. team blanked Iceland 3-0.
A captain for the 2003 squad, Lohman was one of five players to make a return to the tournament from the 2002 championship team. Lohman led all U.S. scorers in the 2003 tournament.
As a member of the 2002 Penn State squad, Lohman was a MAC Hermann Trophy finalist and earned first-team NSCAA All-America honors for the second-straight year. She helped the Nittany Lions to their second NCAA College Cup appearance in four years and was named to the College Cup All-Tournament team. PSU posted a 19-4-1 overall record and a 9-1-0 conference mark to claim a fifth-straight Big Ten title. Lohman also excels in the classroom, earning first team Verizon Academic All-America recognition. She also became the first junior to win the NSCAA Scholar Athlete of the Year award.
No. 7 Penn State opens the 2003 season with a two-game road swing at No. 21 Florida and No. 15 Florida State on Aug. 29 and 31. The Nittany Lions' home opener vs. Harvard is Friday, Sept. 5, at 5 p.m. on Jeffrey Field.
