UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State women’s soccer team has released its schedule for the 2017 regular season, as announced by head coach Erica Dambach. The Nittany Lions are slated to play 17 regular season matches, including eight contests at Jeffrey Field. The 2017 slate features 11 opponents that qualified for the 2016 NCAA Tournament, including five teams that advanced to at least the third round.
“Our 2017 schedule is as challenging as ever and will provide us the opportunity to play against some of the best programs in the country,” Dambach said. “We’re excited to welcome BYU and Hofstra back on our opening weekend and look forward to bringing the North Carolina Tar Heels to Happy Valley for the first time on September 7. The Big Ten line-up will be as challenging as ever and will hopefully draw some big Friday night crowds to beautiful Jeffrey Field!”
The Nittany Lions are slated to kick off the 2017-18 Penn State Athletics year by hosting BYU on Aug. 18 and Hofstra on Aug. 20. The 2016 home opener for the Nittany Lions featured Penn State setting a program attendance record at Jeffrey Field with 5,791 fans against West Virginia on Aug. 19, 2016.
Following the opening weekend against BYU and Hofstra, the Nittany Lions take their first road trip of the season to Arkansas (Aug. 25) and West Virginia (Sept. 2). Penn State and West Virginia have met at least once in the regular season every year since 2009 and last year’s contest featured the two programs playing to a 1-1 tie in the 2016 season opener.
The Nittany Lions then continue their stretch against top competition when they host North Carolina and travel to Virginia.
On Sept. 7, North Carolina makes its first-ever trip to Happy Valley before Penn State heads to Virginia to close out its non-conference season on Sept. 10. North Carolina fell in the semifinal round of the 2016 College Cup, while Virginia’s 2016 season came to a close in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
Penn State begins its quest for its 19th Big Ten regular season title at home against Northwestern (Sept. 14) and Illinois (Sept. 17). Northwestern, the 2016 Big Ten regular season co-champions, along with Minnesota and Penn State, tallied a record of 16-3-4 overall in 2016 and a Big Ten record of 7-1-3.
The Blue and White then hits the road for three matches at Iowa (Sept. 22), Nebraska (Sept. 24), and Ohio State (Sept. 30) before returning home to host Michigan (Oct. 6) and Michigan State (Oct. 8).
The Big Ten slate continues for the Nittany Lions at Rutgers (Oct. 12) and Maryland (Oct. 15). Following matches at Rutgers and Maryland, the Nittany Lions close out the regular season against Purdue (Oct. 20) and at Wisconsin (Oct. 25).
Due to a rotating Big Ten schedule, Penn State will not play Indiana or Minnesota during the 2017 regular season.
The Big Ten Tournament begins on Oct. 29, with the top-four seeds hosting quarterfinal matches and the highest seed remaining will then host the semifinal (Nov. 3) and championship (Nov. 5) matches. The NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament starts on November 10.
The 2017 Women’s College Cup is scheduled for Dec. 1-3 at Orlando City SC Stadium in Orlando, Fla.
Dates and times for all matches are subject to change. Penn State women's soccer does not charge for tickets or parking during the regular season at Jeffrey Field. Promotions for the upcoming season will be announced at a later date.
