STATE COLLEGE, Pa., June 13, 2002 - Penn State women's lacrosse seniors Brooke Bailey (Wallingford, Pa.) and Sara Young (West Chester, Pa.) have been named to the 2002 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Academic All-America team, it was announced today.

Bailey, who graduated with a degree in Advertising and Public Relations, started all 17 games during the 2002 season for the Nittany Lions, scoring 14 goals on 28 shots and adding three assists. She collected 18 ground balls and had 5 caused turnovers while also gathering 12 draw controls. This is Bailey's second year on the IWLCA Academic All-America squad. She was also recognized last season.

Young graduated this spring with a degree in Marketing. She played in 16 games for the Lions, gathering seven ground balls along with causing five turnovers.

The Lions have placed seven different athletes on 12 occasions on national Academic All-America teams. Becky Vaughn was a two-time GTE-CoSIDA recipient (1988-89) while Kara Stockett (1994), Jen Kotkin (1995), Tara Rowlyk-Hohenshelt (1996-97), Emily Mechem (1997-98) and Courtney Jenkins (1999) were all honored by the IWLCA as Academic All-America selections.

Penn State ended their 8-9 season ranked 15th in the IWLCA Coaches Poll and 17th by Warrior/Inside Lacrosse magazine. Twelve of the Lion's 17 opponents are ranked in the Top 20 in the final IWLCA poll, including every team in the top five (Princeton, Georgetown, North Carolina, Virginia and Loyola). Penn State was ranked as high as 10th after their 10-9 defeat of then-third-ranked Loyola on April 6 at Jeffrey Field.
