Penn State Women's Lacrosse Drops Heartbreaker to Ohio State, 10-9
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., April 27, 2003 - The ninth-ranked Penn State women's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaker, 10-9, to 10th-ranked Ohio State Saturday afternoon at Jeffrey Field. The Nittany Lions even their record at 8-8 while the Buckeyes improve to 12-3.
Freshman Shari Maslin (New City, N.Y.) led Penn State in scoring with three goals while sophomore Kristen Burke (Severna Park, Md.) scored two. Seniors Colleen O'Hara (Ardmore, Pa.) and Kristin Wood (Wilton, Conn.) and juniors Jackie Sherman (Wilton, Conn.) and Jamie Donahue (Oreland, Pa.) each scored one goal for the Lions.
Ohio State was led by Shannon Wilson and Regina Oliver with four goals each while Ashley Evans and Caroline Weatherhill scored one each.
Maslin got Penn State on the board at the 3:42 mark on an unassisted goal and Burke added her first score less than a minute later before Donahue put away a free position shot to give Penn State the 3-0 lead just 6:55 into the contest. Sherman's goal at 12:07 pushed the lead to four before Evans scored Ohio State's first goal of the game at 15:26. Maslin's second goal came at the 19:02 mark to put the Lions back up by four, 5-1. But three consecutive Buckeye goals ended the half with Penn State leading 5-4.
O'Hara put the Lions back up two, 6-4, with a goal 3:21 into the second half. But Ohio State then went on a tear, scoring four goals, three consecutive by Wilson, over the next nine minutes to go up 8-6. Back to back goals by Maslin and Burke tied the game at 8-8 with less than nine minutes to play. Ohio State's Wilson scored at the 52:04 mark to put the Buckeyes up one, but Wood scored on a free position shot to tie the game at 9-9 with less than six minutes remaining. Oliver scored the game-winning goal for Ohio State at the 56:12 mark, and Penn State attempts to tie the game in the remaining minutes were thwarted.
Penn State sophomore goalkeeper Lee Tortorelli (Havertown, Pa.) recorded six saves in the contest.
