Penn State Women's Lacrosse falls to Ohio, 8-7

ATHENS, Ohio, April 25, 2004 - The 19th-ranked Penn State women's lacrosse team fell to Ohio University Sunday, 8-7. This is the 5th one-goal loss for the Lions this season, as they fall to 5-10 and 2-3 in American Lacrosse Conference play. The Bobcats improve to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in the ALC.

Sophomore Lori Havrilla (Devon, Pa.) and senior Stephanie Curnoles (Baltimore, Md.)each scored two goals for Penn State with senior Janique Craig (Doylestown, Pa.) and juniors Sara Ward (West Chester, Pa.) and Kristen Burke (Severna Park, Md.) each posting one. Sophomore Shari Maslin (New City, N.Y.) also added two assists with Craig and Curnoles each picking up one.

Junior goalkeeper Lee Tortorelli (Havertown, Pa.) recorded 14 saves in the outing while also adding three ground balls.

Penn State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first six minutes of play on unassisted goals from Havrilla and Curnoles at 3:21 and 5:45, respectively. After ten minutes of scoreless play, Ohio scored a goal before another nine minutes of scorless play. Curnoles scored her second goal of the game at the 25:00 mark to put Penn State on top, 3-1. Ohio scored as the half ended to make the score 3-2 going into the break.

After back-to-back Bobcat goals to open the second half put Ohio on top 4-3, Penn State tied the game at four on a goal by Burke at the 37:10 mark. However, the Bobcats scored three straight goals in the next 16 minutes to make the score 7-4. With only nine minutes remaining to make a comeback, Havrilla scored to bring Penn State within two. Ohio answered two minutes later as Melissa Menna scored her fourth goal of the game. For the Lions, Ward scored her first goal of the season with 6:28 remaining in the game to make the score 8-6. Craig scored as the horn sounded to end the game, to make the final score 8-7, in favor of Ohio University.

The Nittany Lions before return home to host Johns Hopkins at noon on Saturday, May 1.
