EVANSTON, Ill.; April 14, 2007 - The No. 8 Penn State women's lacrosse team kept it close for most of the first half, but was unable to pull off its third upset of the 2007 season and fell to No. 1 Northwestern, 19-8, on Saturday afternoon at Lakeside Field.

Penn State's scoring was balanced, as senior Karen Long (Ellicott City, Md.), sophomore Kerry Shea (Baltimore, Md.), and freshman Maria Valderas (Catonsville, Md.) each netted two goals. Shea and Valderas also recorded two assists for the Nittany Lions, which dropped their overall record to 8-5 (0-2, ALC) with the loss. Freshmen Mary LeNoir (Timonium, Md.) and Erica Mihm (Annapolis, Md.) also scored a goal each.

Northwestern jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but Valderas answered to get the Nittany Lions on the board. After another Wildcat score, Shea netted her 21st goal of the year to tie the score at 2-2.

Northwestern would score three straight goals, but Penn State answered back by scoring two of the next three. LeNoir and Long each got on the score sheet as Penn State only found itself down 6-4 with twelve minutes left in the first half. But the Nittany Lions would get no closer as the two-time defending champion Wildcats would go on a 9-0 run over the next 20 minutes to break the game open.

Valderas scored her second goal of the game with 21 minutes left in the second half to stop the Northwestern run, making the score 15-5. But the Nittany Lions would be held on another 15 minute scoreless stretch, as the Wildcats extended their lead to 18-5. Long, Shea, and Mihm all scored with less than five minutes remaining in the game to round out the scoring for Penn State.

Junior Jessi Lieb (Villanova, Pa.) and senior Lindsay Dutch (Ellicott City, Md.) each recorded an assist for the Nittany Lions. Dutch now has a team-high 14 assists on the season.

Penn State returns home for Senior Night on Fri., April 20 against another ALC foe, Ohio State. Game time is set for 7 p.m. with the location yet to be determined.
