Penn State Women's Lacrosse Downs Johns Hopkins, 11-4

BALTIMORE, Md., April 7, 2003 - The Penn State women's lacrosse team improved to 6-5 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the American Lacrosse Conference with an 11-4 win over Johns Hopkins Monday in Baltimore, Md. Seven different Nittany Lions scored in the winning effort as the Blue Jays fall to 6-3, 4-2 in the ALC.

Juniors Jamie Donahue (Oreland, Pa.) and Katie Jeschke (Ellicott City, Md.) and sophomores Kristen Burke (Severna Park, Md.) and Emily Chambers (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) all scored twice for Penn State while freshman Shari Maslin (New City, N.Y.), junior Stephanie Curnoles (Baltimore, Md.) and senior Kristin Wood (Wilton, Conn.) each added one goal. Curnoles, senior Colleen O'Hara (Ardmore, Pa.) and junior Katie Hartman (Annapolis, Md.) combined for six assists.

Jeschke opened up the scoring less than two minutes into the game and Johns Hopkins answered at the 26:55 mark to tie the score at 1-1. From there the Nittany Lions exploded, scoring the next seven goals, including first two of the second half. Back-to-back goals less than a minute apart from Burke and Chambers put Penn State up 3-1 and Wood recorded her tally two minutes later for the three goal lead. A Jeschke goal off a free position shot gave the Lions the 5-1 advantage and Curnoles' goal with 2:35 remaining before half put Penn State up 6-1 going into halftime.

Donahue and Maslin got the scoring going in the second half for the 8-1 lead before Johns Hopkins scored with 12 minutes remaining in the game. Chambers, Burke and Donahue again added tallies before two more Johns Hopkins goals made the final score 11-4 in favor of the Nittany Lions.

Penn State took 20 shots compared to the Blue Jays' 30 and converted on 3-of-6 free position shots while Johns Hopkins could not convert on any of its five. The Blue Jays picked up 36 ground balls to Penn State's 25 and Johns Hopkins controlled nine draws to Penn State's eight.

Sophomore goalkeeper Lee Tortorelli (Havertown, Pa.) recorded an astounding 17 saves on 30 shots while allowing only four goals.

The Nittany Lions return home on Tuesday, April 15 for a 5:00 p.m. contest with Penn.
