Penn State Women¡¯s Lacrosse Falls to North Carolina, 15-7

College Park, Md., March 31, 2002 The 11th-ranked Penn State women's lacrosse team fell to fifth-ranked North Carolina, 15-7. The Lions fall to 3-6 on the season while UNC improves to 7-2 overall.

North Carolina took an early 3-0 lead in the first half before sophomore Jamie Donahue (Oreland, Pa.) put Penn State on the board at the 12:58 mark. The Tar Heels would then go on to score six unanswered goals to go up 8-1.

Junior Katie Pace (Orchard Park, N.Y.) added Penn State's second tally of the half with 6:12 remaining, and a UNC goal with 1:32 left in the stanza would give the Tar Heels a commanding 9-2 lead going into the break.

The second half started as the first half ended, with UNC scoring three of its five second-half goals less than five minutes into the stanza before junior Kristin Wood (Wilton, Conn.) answered with a goal at the 23:18 mark.

Another UNC goal was followed by Donahue's second tally of the afternoon, making the score 12-4. Sophomore Katie Jeschke (Ellicott City, Md.), junior Colleen O'Hara (Ardmore, Pa.) and sophomore Stephanie Curnoles (Baltimore, Md.) also scored for Penn State but the deficit proved to be too much for the Lions to overcome. Two more goals by North Carolina ended the game at 15-7.

Freshman goalkeeper Lee Tortorelli (Havertown, Pa.) recorded 11 saves in the contest.

Penn State returns home on Saturday, April 6 as it takes on Loyola at 1:00 p.m.
