Penn State Women's Lacrosse Defeats William & Mary, 13-7

WILLIAMSBURG, Va., March 16, 2003 - The Penn State women's lacrosse team defeated William and Mary, 13-7, Sunday in Williamsburg, Va. The Nittany Lions improve to 3-2 while the Tribe fall to 0-5.

Junior Katie Jeschke (Ellicott City, Md.) and freshman Shari Maslin (New City, N.Y.) both scored three goals while senior Colleen O'Hara (Ardmore, Pa.), junior Jamie Donahue (Oreland, Pa.) and Kristen Burke (Severna Park, Md.) each recorded two scores and freshman Lori Havrilla (Devon, Pa.) posted one goal.

William and Mary's Lauren Work opened up scoring less than two minutes into the game, but Penn State charged right back to score a minute and a half later when O'Hara accepted a pass from Jeschke to tie the game. O'Hara scored again three minutes later to give the Lions the 2-1 lead. Penn State then went on a 4-0 run behind two scores each from Burke and Maslin. A Tribe goal with just four seconds remaining before halftime cut Penn State's lead to 6-2 going into the break.

Jeschke found the back of the net less than a minute into the second half to give the Lions a 7-2 lead, but two William and Mary goals cut the Lion advantage to three at 7-4. Over the next seven minutes, Penn State scored five unanswered goals to take the 12-4 lead. William and Mary scored three more times and Havrilla added a goal for the Lions with 7:55 remaining in the game to make the final score 13-7 in favor of Penn State.

Sophomore goalkeeper Lee Tortorelli (Haverford, Pa.) recorded nine saves in the contest, along with a team-high six ground balls. Senior Katie Pace (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and junior Stephanie Curnoles (Baltimore, Md.) each tallied four ground balls in the contest as Curnoles also picked up three draw controls.

Penn State travels Princeton, N.J. on March 22 for a 2:00 p.m. contest with the Tigers of Princeton. The Lions then return home on March 25 when they host Temple at 3:00 p.m.
