CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., March 14, 2003 - The Penn State women's lacrosse team dropped a 15-9 contest to Virginia Friday night in Charlottesville, Va. The Nittany Lions fall to 2-2 on the season while the Cavaliers improve to 4-2.
Juniors Katie Jeschke (Ellicott City, Md.) and Katie Hartman (Annapolis, Md.) both posted three goals for Penn State while freshman Lori Havrilla (Devon, Pa.), sophomore Kristen Burke (Severna Park, Md.) and junior Steph Curnoles (Baltimore, Md.) each posted a goal for the Lions.
Penn State gained the 2-0 advantage just 2:19 into the game behind goals from Burke and Curnoles. A Virginia score pulled the Cavaliers within one but Hartman's first tally allowed the Lions to regain the two-goal advantage. Virginia then went on a 6-0 run over the next 10 minutes before a Jeschke free position goal made the score 7-4 in favor of the Hoos. Another Jeschke goal pulled Penn State to within two at 7-5 but Virginia scored three more times to take the 10-5 advantage into halftime.
Two Cavalier scores opened up play in the second half before goals from Hartman and Havrilla made the score 12-7. Three Virginia goals increased the score to 15-7 with less than eight minutes remaining in the contest. Goals by Hartman and Jeschke made the final score 15-9.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lee Tortorelli (Havertown, Pa.) tied her career-high with 20 saves in 60 minutes of play.
Penn State travels to Williamsburg, Va. to face William & Mary on Sunday, March 16 at noon. The Lions return home on March 25 when they host Temple at 3:00 p.m.
