Penn State Women¡¯s Lacrosse Falls To James Madison, 16-8

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., March 9, 2004 - The 14th-ranked Penn State women¡¯s lacrosse team fell to sixth-ranked James Madison, 16-8, Tuesday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Va. The Nittany Lions drop to 1-2 on the season.

Sophomore Lori Havrilla (Devon, Pa.) scored her second four-goal game of the season against the Dukes while junior Emily Chambers (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) added two goals and seniors Stephanie Curnoles (Baltimore, Md.) and Katie Hartman (Annapolis, Md.) tallied one goal each. Chambers and junior Kate Townsend (Collingswood, N.J.) both added assists in the loss.

Junior goalkeeper Lee Tortorelli (Havertown, Pa.) recorded a season-high 17 saves in the outing.

For James Madison, Gail Decker tied the school record for goals in a game with seven. Jessica Brownridge recorded five goals, Monica Buck added three and Kelly Berger tallied one.

Havrilla opened up the scoring less than two minutes into the game off a pass from Chambers before Decker put James Madison on the board less than a minute later. Havrilla posted back to back goals nine seconds apart to put the Nittany Lions up 3-1 before the Dukes went on a 5-0 run behind three Decker goals to take the 6-3 lead with 8:55 to go in the first half. Two Chambers goals off of free position shots and an unassisted Hartman mark tied the score at 6-6 going into the break.

James Madison started the second half on fire, scoring the first seven goals of the period to go up 13-6 before a Curnoles free position goal halted the run with 9:42 to go in the game. The Dukes answered with another goal at the 52:54 mark and Havrilla¡¯s fourth goal of the game with just over six minutes to go in the game wasn¡¯t enough as James Madison scored two more goals en route to the 16-8 victory.

Penn State returns home on Friday, March 12 to take on ninth-ranked Virginia at 4:00 p.m. The Nittany Lions then play host to William & Mary on Sunday, March 14 at 12:00 p.m.
