UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State women's hockey program will get its first taste of the playoffs when it travels to RIT on Friday for the best-of-three series with the Tigers it was confirmed by College Hockey America. Game two of the series will be Saturday and the third game, if necessary, will be on Sunday. All games are slated for 2 p.m. faceoffs.
The series, which will be played at Frank Ritter Memorial Ice Arena, pits the third-seeded Tigers (14-15-5, 7-8-5 CHA) against the sixth-seeded Nittany Lions (7-24-2, 1-17-2 CHA). The winner will play the No. 2 seed Syracuse Orange in Erie, Pa. on Friday, Mar. 8 in the CHA Semifinals hosted by Mercyhurst. The Lakers are the No. 1 seed and will face either Lindenwood or Robert Morris. Lindenwood and Syracuse wrap up the regular season on Tuesday and Wednesday, which will determine the fourth between the Lions and the Colonials.
RIT went 3-0-1 against Penn State this season, with the lone positive result for PSU coming at Greenberg Ice Pavilion on Oct. 26 when the Tigers scrambled for a 2-2 tie. Penn State dropped the series opener 4-1 the day before and held a 2-0 lead in the first period on Oct. 26, but RIT tied it with 89 seconds left in the third period.
When the teams met in Rochester earlier this month, RIT skated to a 3-1 win with the difference coming on two RIT power play goals in the first two periods on Feb. 15. The next day, RIT used three goals in the second period to take a three-goal lead en route to a 4-0 win.
Ticket prices for the weekend will be $5 for adults and $3 for students and children. Tickets can be purchased at Ritter Arena. Additionally, AmericaOneSports.com will stream each of the games.
Both teams are first-year members of the six-team conference. RIT is the defending NCAA Division III champion, while Penn State is in its first season as a varsity program.
