Lions Drop First Game of Season, 5-1, to Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, Conn. - The Nittany Lion women's hockey team dropped its first game of the season in a 5-1 decision at Quinnipiac on Friday night. Shannon Yoxheimer (Jackson, Mich.) tallied her second goal of the season, while Nicole Paniccia (Oakville, Ont.) saved 48 shots.
Quinnipiac (2-0-1) opened the scoring account 15:29 into the game on a Kelly Babstock power-play tally. The Bobcats doubled the lead through the power play when Shiann Darkangelo found the back of the net 4:12 into the second period.
Yoxheimer cut QU's lead in half on her second goal of the season scored at 8:43 in the second period. Sarah Nielsen (Edina, Minn.) notched her fourth assist of the year, while Taylor Gross (Colorado Springs, Colo.) earned her second helper on the season.
Quinnipiac pushed the lead back to two on a Morgan Fritz-Ward tally with just 75 seconds remaining in the second period. The Bobcats would later add two more late in the third period by Anna Borgfeldt and Meghan Turner. Borgfeldt's tally was registered with 4:46 left in the game, while Turner notched one of her own just 90 seconds later.
Final shots read 53-25 in favor of Quinnpiac. Paniccia stopped 20 shots in the first period, 15 in the second and 13 in the third. QU was 2-for-4 on the power play, while Penn State was 0-for-1.
The Nittany Lions and Bobcats rematch on Saturday at 4 p.m.
