Nittany Lions Unable to Overcome No. 9 RMU, 5-2

NEVILLE TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The Nittany Lion women's hockey team played its third straight game against a ranked opponent and lost 5-2 to No. 9 Robert Morris Friday afternoon despite a great effort at 84 Lumber Arena.
Minnetonka linemates Laura Bowman (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Amy Petersen (Minnetonka, Minn.) each tallied markers for the Blue and White. Fellow linemate Hannah Hoenshell (Plano, Texas) notched two assists to push her team-leading point total to 16.
Penn State (4-26-3, 1-17-1 CHA) conceded the first four goals to Robert Morris (23-7-3, 12-5-1 CHA) as the Colonials took a 4-0 lead in the third period. Katelyn Scott gave RMU a 1-0 lead after the first period before Brittany Howard and Katie Fergus upped the advantage to 3-0 after two periods. RMU dominated play for the first 40 minutes with a 35-8 edge in shots.
Robert Morris expanded the lead to 4-0 on a Rebecca Vint marker before Bowman made it 4-1 with 14:00 left. Bowman became Penn State's first double-digit scorer with her 10th tally of the year. Bowman's score was assisted by Hoenshell and Petersen as the line tallied both goals for the Nittany Lions.
The Colonials made it 5-1 with 9:53 to go on a Kristen Richards tally before Petersen punched back with her fifth goal of the year with 4:25 left. Petersen's goal allowed the Nittany Lions to match the Colonials with two goals each in the third frame.
Robert Morris owned a 45-19 advantage in shots, although the third period was 11-10 in favor of the Nittany Lions. Senior goaltender Nicole Paniccia (Oakville, Ont.) saved 40 shots Friday afternoon.
RMU went 1-for-2 on the power play, while Penn State was 0-for-2 and the Colonials won 33 faceoffs to Penn State's 21. Bowman was PSU's leader with an 11-8 record at the dot. The Nittany Lions sacrificed their bodies 16 times while blocking shots as opposed to RMU's 12. Shannon Yoxheimer (Jackson, Mich.) led the Blue and White with three blocks.
The two teams will rematch Saturday for a 3 p.m. faceoff at 84 Lumber Arena to conclude the regular season. Next week Penn State will be on the road for the CHA First Round.
