Saturday Night Marks Final Home Meet For Four Members of Women's Gymnastics Squad
State College, Pa., March 15, 2001 - Saturday night's quadrangular meet at Rec Hall will mark the final home appearance for a quartet of Penn State women's gymnasts. Senior co-captains Gemma Cuff (Loughborough, England) and Maria Taylor (Dacula, Ga.) will be honored in a ceremony following the meet along with teammates Jennifer Drilling (Fountain Valley, California) and E'Tona Ford (Baltimore, Md.). Cuff, the squad's lone returning All-American from the 2000 squad, battled through some early season injuries to post five first-place event finishes, including four on the vault. She competed in the all-around during three meets this season, a year after being one of only two Nittany Lions to enter the all-around in all 11 of the team's meets in 2000. During her career at Penn State Cuff tied the school's all-time record score on the vault with a 9.950 in 2000. Cuff earned All-Big Ten status four times in the first three years of her career. Taylor, one of the Lions top specialists on the beam and bars, enjoyed a fabulous senior campaign which saw her claim seven single-event titles and tie the school-record on the bars with a 9.950 versus Massachusetts. During the 2000 season, Taylor earned All-Big Ten honors with a fifth-place effort on the beam at the Big Ten Championships. Drilling and Ford will be recognized due to the fact that each are forced to end their careers due to individual medical conditions. Drilling was a specialist on the uneven bars during her career at Penn State, but was limited to action in only two meets this season. Ford has not competed this year following an injury of her Achilles tendon. Ford was a contributor on the floor and vault during her tenure at Penn State. The Nittany Lions are scheduled to battle No. 3 Alabama, Rutgers and Cornell on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. in Rec Hall in a quad-meet that will be broadcast on a tape-delayed basis on Sunday, March 18 at 12:00 p.m. (ET) by WPSX-TV (AT&T Cable Channel 3 in Centre Region). The meet was originally scheduled to be broadcast live but was moved due to the Penn State women's basketball team's first round game of NCAA Tournament which will be broadcast live on WPSX-TV.
