Penn State Gymnast Katie Rowland Earns Big Ten Gymnast Of The Week Honors
State College, PA., March 12, 2002. Penn State Gymnast, Junior Katie Rowland (Georgetown, Ontario) was named Big Ten Co-Gymnast of the Week for the week ending March 10th. She shares the honor with Michigan gymnast and former olympian, Elise Ray. Rowland set the Penn State all-time record for best all-around score, as she swept all five events against Rhode Island and Maryland to post an all-around total of 39.725. She was victorious on the floor exercise (9.925), vault (9.950), uneven bars (9.900) and balance beam (9.950). Her score on the vault tied a school record, and her beam score is a career best.
Rowland has been Penn State's most consistent gymnast all season, placing in the top three in each individual all-around competition this season. She placed second in the all-around competition in the Super Six challenge to open the season. This meet put Penn State up against some of the best teams in the country. She has scored a 9.900 or better on at least one event in every meet this season and is Penn State's top-scorer on all events except uneven bars. Nationally, Rowland is ranked fourth this week in the all-around, 16th on floor, 13th on balance beam and 10th on vault. Rowland will look to improve her scores this week as the Lions take on West Virginia at Home at 7 p.m. in Rec Hall.
